Ministry Studying To Increase Power, Water Consumption Tariff After Two Years Except For Residential Sector
The Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mishaan Al-Otaibi, announced the ministry is studying to increase the water and electricity tariff on all sectors except for the residential sector; expected to be approved after two years, calling it part of the economic reform program.
During a press conference, Al-Otaibi said “the ministry’s strategic plan from 2020 to 2030 includes 5 main goals, the most prominent of which are meeting the country’s water and electricity needs in line with economic studies, digital transformation, sustainable development, institutional excellence and human development.
He added, the amendment of consumption tariffs on all sectors except for the residential sector will be one of the axes of the plan.
The Al-Rai daily quoting Al-Otaibi said the ministry aims to increase the power and water capacity during the next ten years to 50 percent, by increasing the production of electric power by 8 thousand megawatts.
He referred to the establishment of renewable energy projects which are implemented by the Ministry and the Partnership Projects Authority with a capacity of 5,000 megawatts.
He also pointed out to a plan to operate all power plants with natural gas and clean fuels as of next year.
Al-Otaibi explained the “ministry seeks, through its plan, to reduce the unit cost of electricity and water by increasing the efficiency of the power stations.”
On the other hand, Al-Otaibi revealed “if the implementation of electricity production projects is delayed beyond their schedule, we will be facing crisis by the 2025.”
