Ministry On Trail Of Maltese Kuwaitis

03 January 2019 Kuwait

‘Kuwaitis are buying Maltese citizenship’, the headline in a local daily has not gone unnoticed, reports Al-Rai daily. The headline has echoed within the walls of the National Assembly and the government has shown equal interest.

The first parliamentary query is expected to be submitted to the ministers of Interior and Foreign Affairs with a request to follow up the case of ‘Maltese Kuwaitis’. Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid Al-Jarallah told the daily the issue of dual nationality is within the competence of the Ministry of Interior and spoke about the permanent coordination between the two sides in this regard.

“The Kuwaiti nationality law is crystal clear which forbids the citizens from acquiring the citizenship of any other country,” he said. He explained that the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this aspect is limited to the investigation of the validity of information concerning dual nationality through the overseas Kuwaiti embassies and if the Ministry of Interior requests details on the issue, the Foreign Ministry is ready to follow up this issue with the competent authorities via official channels.

Parliamentarian Dr Odeh Al-Ruwaie told the daily the file of naturalization is thorny and “we cannot talk about this file without knowing the motives that sometimes exist, frustrations and feelings that may reach despair and resort to securing certain things through obtaining citizenship of other countries. “If one of them has obtained a certain nationality of his/her free will, he/she has to realize that he/she will lose the Kuwaiti nationality,” he added. He went on to say, there are Kuwaitis whose children hold British and US nationalities by birth.
