Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) newly operational crude distillation unit (111) at Mina Abdullah Refinery is the largest in Kuwait, with a refining capacity of 264,000 barrels per day, an official said on Wednesday. The refinery’s total capacity will be raised, with the addition, from 270,000 barrels to 454,000 barrels per day, its CEO Wadha Al-Khateeb told a press conference marking its launch.

This unit represents the main gateway for the environmental fuel project at the refinery, which constitutes a major leap forward for the oil refining industry in the country, she explained. KNPC is steadily moving towards implementing the state-run Kuwait Petroleum Corporation strategy, which aims to raise the country’s total refining capacity to around 1.6 million barrels per day.

The unit will also have a role in improving the quality of oil derivative products, to comply with advanced global requirements, she said, opening new markets for these products and strengthening Kuwait’s position as one of the most important oil-producing countries in the world. Its launch comes in spite of the exceptional circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, domestically and globally, she added, expressing her pride in the achievement. Mina Abdullah Refinery is classified in the third category of refining operation complexity, the “most difficult level,” she said, as it includes the diversity of manufacturing units in terms of technology and production capacity, as well as obtaining a higher degree of added value for an oil barrel.
