In his speech during the inauguration ceremony of smart meters for the Ministry of Electricity, Minister Al-Otaibi said that starting today, Tuesday, the new system will be launched and operated, and a contract to supply 200,000 meters has been signed as a first stage, and the tender for the second stage is on its way. He added that it is expected to complete the replacement of all meters in the country within a period ranging between two and three years, according to an installation strategy that begins with the investment and commercial areas first and then the rest of the sectors. He explained that the ministry has adopted several pioneering projects, all of which aim to improve the electrical and water network system while providing new services to customers with high quality and continuity through modern technology.

For his part, Director of Contracts Follow-up and Maintenance Department in the Customer Services Sector, Engineer Malouh Al-Ajmi, said that traditional meters are accompanied by problems that are summarized in the length of the cycle of recording the reading of the meter, as a field visit is required. Al-Ajmi stated that the digital meters are distinguished by sending the readings directly to the system through the communication chip without human intervention. Electronically, payment can be made through the ministry’s application. He pointed out that this allows the customer to measure and control the consumption rate by directly following the meter reading, which contributes to rationalizing consumption of electricity and water, pointing to the possibility of converting the meters to a prepaid system.
