Local Egg Shortage Expected To Continue For Atleast 6 Months

The egg shortage crisis is expected to continue atleast for a period of 6 months agricultural expert, Eng. Muhammad Ibrahim Al-Fraih, told Arabic daily Al Rai, noting that this period is needed by poultry farmers to return to their previous production capacity.

After thousands of live chickens were culled in Kuwaiti farms due to being infected with bird flu the country witnessed a decrease in production of eggs, dropping to 700,000 eggs per day, while the rate for local consumption of eggs was close to two million eggs per day.

Kuwait has been importing Turkish and Jordanian eggs that are being sold at the rate of KD 1.2 per carton and the local demand has seen an increase as the local supply covers only about 50 to 60 percent of the consumers’ need, indicating that despite the Ministry of Trade and Industry opening the door to import from Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in addition to the support provided by the ministry to importers by one dinar for every carton imported.

Sources confirmed that with the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, the demand will be greater, because eggs are an essential part of the breaking of fast and it is used in the production of many foods and sweets, in addition to being a protein-rich, healthy and favourite food for adults and children.

The source pointed out that consumers were rushing to buy eggs more than their need and this  contributed to a shortage, calling on everyone to procure only their needs and not hoard.
