Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Monday attended a highlevel function to commemorate 70 years of the Geneva Conventions, entitled ‘Investing in Humanity Through Multilateralism’.
The event was held under the joint patronage of Switzerland President Ueli Maurer, International Committee of the Red Cross President Peter Maurer, China’s State Counselor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor.
The event shed light on the necessary commitment of adhering to the contents of the Geneva Peace Accords, which represent one of the most important humanitarian achievements in history.
It also urged working to achieve the goals, these accords were designed to reach, after two devastating World Wars. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah met Sudan’s Foreign Minister Asmaa Abdallah on the fringes of his attendance of the United Nations General Assembly session on Monday.
The deputy foreign minister wished all the best for the Sudanese government in achieving growth and prosperity and ensuring security and stability. The meeting also touched on the historical brotherly relations between the two countries and the two peoples, along with issues of mutual significance.
Attending the talks alongside the deputy prime minister was Kuwait’s Assistant Foreign Minister for the the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister’s Office Sheikh Ahmad Naser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s Permanent UN Representative Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi and Minister Plenipotentiary and Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organisations Nasser Al-Hain, amongst other ministry officials. And , Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah headed Kuwait’s delegation at Arab League consultative talks held on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly session on Monday.
The meeting, chaired by Iraq’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Al-Hakim, discussed numerous matters on the General Assembly talks’ agenda, predominantly Palestinian affairs and the Middle East peace process. Arab League cooperation and Security Council cooperation on the matter, coordination between Arab states on facing current regional challenges and the latest regional and international developments also formed part of the discussions.
Kuwait’s delegation consisted of Assistant Foreign Minister for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Muhammad Al-Sabah and Kuwait’s Permanent UN Representative Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi. Also, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah took part in the summit of protecting religious freedom.
The meeting was held upon a call from US President Donald Trump as part of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly held in New York.
The gathering discussed means of tackling discrimination based on religion and cooperation frameworks towards promoting respect and maintaining religious freedoms. It called on the international community to take required measures to face challenges caused by persecution against religious minorities across the globe.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also met with the President of the UN General Assembly of the 74th Session Tijjani Muhammad-Bande. During the meeting, Bande underlined the UNGA program priorities during his presidency of the 74th session, particularly those related to sustainable development, promotion and protection of human rights, poverty eradication and education support. The meeting also addressed the topics and issues on the agenda of the current session of the General Assembly
