Kuwaitis Enrolled In Egyptian Universities Face Challenges

03 October 2020 Kuwait

More than 20,000 Kuwaiti students who had enrolled in Egyptian universities are facing difficult challenges in terms of the upcoming start of the new academic year due to the continued suspension of flights between Kuwait and Egypt, coinciding with the start of the marathon registration process at universities following the release of high school results, reports Al-Qabas daily. The daily met with the President of the National Union of Kuwaiti Students — Egypt branch Ahmad Al-Shammari to understand the extent of suffering of Kuwaiti students due to unavailability of direct fiights between the two countries.

Al-Shammari revealed about his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Dr Ahmad Al-Nasser in order to brief him on the suffering of the students, indicating that the minister assured to work on solving these problems in the coming days. He explained that the closure of airspace has greatly affected the Kuwaiti students and increased their suffering, especially since the cost of air tickets has doubled to reach KD 400. Also, the time required for making the trip has increased due to the need to stop at a transit airport.

The closure also led to postponement of the final exams from last year, even though the students are on the verge of a new academic year. Al-Shammari highlighted “the possibility of a student failing if he does not make the new dates for the postponed exams. This puts the Kuwaiti student in a state of anxiety due to the changes that have occurred and are taking place”.

Delay
He said, “The delay in studying in Kuwait did not affect the enrollment of Kuwaiti students who wish to study in Egyptian universities, as registration in Egypt is still open and may be extended due to the exceptional circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic”.

According to the announcement made by Al-Shammari, the freshmen committee will take over the headquarters of Kuwait Teachers Association if the demand for Egyptian universities increases, as it did last year. He indicated that it will work to introduce students to universities for bachelor’s and master’s programs, and will complete all paperwork for the students without the need for them to travel to Egypt except when the school year resumes.

Al-Shammari highlighted the great turnout for admissions at Egyptian universities despite the decline in the number of these universities recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in Kuwait to just seven. He indicated that Kuwaiti students have a few options, but Egypt is still an attractive destination for studies.
