Kuwaiti Surgeons Conduct First Liver Transplant

28 November 2020 Health

A Kuwaiti medical team has successfully conducted a liver transplant, the first such procedure performed by Kuwaiti specialists, according to media reports.

The six-hour transplant was performed on a Kuwaiti woman who suffered from liver cirrhosis and its complications, a member of the team said.

“The patient’s health condition is constantly improving and the transplanted liver functions well,” Dr Mohammed Jamal added.

“The operation was the 12th liver transplant conducted in Kuwait. But, it was the first liver transplant operation that was fully carried out by a Kuwaiti team,” he added in media remarks.

Dr Jamal called the operation an “inspiring historic medial achievement.” The recipient of the liver, in her sixties, was originally to travel abroad for medical treatment. However, the plan was derailed by the global coronavirus pandemic. The liver was taken from a dead person after approval from the family.

Head of the Kuwaiti Medical Society Dr Ahmed Al Enazi hailed the success of the operation, saying it marks a leap for the Kuwaiti medical development.
