Kuwait To Replace Expats With Bidoon

According to a local publication quoting an official, Kuwait's labour officials aim to build up a platform to register the country's stateless Bidoon seeking work in the private sector to replace ex-pats.

The Tayseer platform will be launched on Sunday in conjunction with the Central Agency for Dealing with Illegal Residents, according to Ahmed Al Moussa, the head of the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM).

"This platform intends to replace expatriate labour with this type of individuals to preserve the demographic make-up, secure their rights under the cover of law, and provide them with the opportunity [for work] commensurate with their abilities and leanings," he stated in a press statement.

The official praised the private sector for creating jobs through the new employment channel.

The Bidoon, who number roughly 85,000 people in Kuwait, has been at the centre of a long-running identity crisis. Foreigners account for almost 3.4 million of Kuwait's 4.6 million population.

In recent months, there have been increased requests in Kuwait for foreign job restrictions, as well as charges that migrant workers have put pressure on the country's infrastructural facilities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's economic impact.
