Kuwait To Renew Decentralised Iqama For Teachers

15 June 2022 Kuwait

Kuwait's local newspaper reports that a decentralized system facilitating the renewal of foreign teachers' iqamas will be in effect next week.

In its report, Al Qabas noted that the Education Ministry is preparing to transfer authority to education departments in order to renew non-Kuwaiti teachers' iqamas.

It quoted well-informed sources to indicate that education employees have been trained for the mission.

The ministry will benefit from this measure, they said.

"Decentralizing the renewal of iqama will also ensure smooth work and undelayed transactions, especially at a time when [foreign] teachers are looking forward to taking their summer holidays in their home countries," the sources noted.

Kuwait has revealed plans to extend iqamas for expatriate teachers to two years and not just one year.

Rajaa Bouarki, assistant undersecretary for administrative affairs for the Education Ministry, told Al Rai newspaper earlier this month the Interior Ministry was willing to approve the extension, but the Health Ministry should coordinate teachers' health insurance as well.

Education personnel will have easier access to the ministry's system and can now conduct transactions, she said.

It is not known how many expatriate teachers will be benefited by the new system.
