Kuwait Stresses The Necessity Of Preparing For The Post-coronavirus Phase
The State of Kuwait affirmed the need for international preparation and cooperation for the post-pandemic phase (Coronavirus – Covid 19) in a more comprehensive and sustainable manner.
In a speech during the general discussions of the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in its 75th session entitled (Building back better after Covid-19, ensuring a more equitable global economy, inclusive societies and sustainable recovery) yesterday evening, First Secretary Abdullah Al Sharrah said, “At a time when countries are striving To make unremitting efforts to make tangible progress in overcoming the obstacles that hinder the implementation of the sustainable development goals in all its dimensions, we hoped that 2020 would be an important year in terms of achievement, progress and acceleration of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development .
Al-Sharrah expressed regret for what happened as a result of the accelerated spread of the Corona virus epidemic, which has caused millions to be infected and hundreds of thousands of people dead, and at the same time threatens the lives and livelihood of the peoples of the world.
He continued, “What we are facing today in these exceptional and difficult circumstances as a result of the various challenges, on top of which are the repercussions of this epidemic, make cooperation and solidarity a very important matter to curb this epidemic and protect humanity and the planet.”
He added, “We count on our partners from the governments of countries and relevant international organizations, including companies, for solidarity and alliance, far from any form of competition in the field of developing, producing and distributing vaccines and treatments for all, as soon as they are approved as the only way to eliminate the epidemic to cross this difficult stage.”
Al-Sharrah stated that it will not be possible to face the economic, social and environmental consequences of the epidemic without international unity and solidarity at the highest and most comprehensive level.
He mentioned that although the State of Kuwait is classified as one of the developing countries with high incomes, it has realized the importance of enhancing pluralism and international cooperation through double solidarity mechanisms and initiatives to assist and support the efforts of the most affected countries, including the United Nations represented by the World Health Organization.
“Sensing the size of the negative repercussions resulting from the epidemic, Kuwait’s efforts to contain the epidemic were not limited to the national level only, as it hastened to contribute $ 290 million to ensure the continuation of efforts to combat the spread of the epidemic and limit its multiple and complex repercussions regionally and internationally,” Al-Sharrah said.
He explained that these contributions enhance multilateral action and cooperation and are guided by the pioneering development, humanitarian and relief path of the State of Kuwait, which is full of giving in the context of responding to emergencies around the world, including the emerging coronavirus pandemic.
He stressed the need to make more efforts to achieve just and equitable sustainable development and to reduce the catastrophic impacts on our planet as a result of the loss of biological diversity, such as climate change, without taking more measures in accordance with the principle of joint responsibility with varying burdens.
He added, “All this requires developed countries to fulfill international obligations, particularly official development assistance, by allocating seven-tenths of a percent of gross national product to enable developing countries to better meet their development needs.”
