The Ministry of Public Works and the Public Authority for Roads and Land Transport continue to work on the reasphalting of roads, according to the plan that was launched on April 2 to deal with the flying gravel, in addition to the damage caused years ago, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The daily accompanied by work teams met with a number of engineers working on the King Fahd Road to follow the implementation of the work which is divided into two teams: the first supervises and oversees the implementation while the second follows the work carried out by the Authority which is responsible for the maintenance of highways.

The workers complained about the lack of respect for the laws by the drivers in the area where the work is being carried out and stressed some drivers drive in the ‘open lane’ at more than 120 km, while the instructions say speed should not exceed 60 km in those areas..

The workers said some motorists are reckless and do not fear for their lives although the work area is clearly separated by plastic cones. In terms of the nature of the work, a number of engineers at the site explained that currently the surface layer is being scraped and then examine the second layer to ascertain if that layer needs maintenance or not and accordingly either another 5 cm is scrapped or not, which is known as a theoretical examination.

As for the role of supervisory teams, the engineers said: Their role is to take samples of asphalt before laying, to check the safety of the materials used, to monitor the cleanliness of the site and to close the areas where work is done in full as well as other works. On the working mechanism, they explained that the process of closing the road takes place from 4 pm and extends to 6 am the next day and the number of lanes that are closed according to the work plan is determined every day.
