Mp Warns Over Increase In The Prices Of Food And Other Commodities
MP Khaleel Al-Saleh has urged the concerned governmental authorities to intensify their efforts in preventing unjustified increase in the prices of food and other commodities, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking to reporters, he affirmed that the relevant parliamentary committee intends to investigate the issue and determine the extent of price hikes considering the people’s income remains unchanged.
He hopes the investigation report and recommendations of the committee will be used as basis for holding the government accountable for unjustified price hikes. He pointed out the concerned officials and ministers have confirmed addressing the issue but the greed of traders often supersedes such efforts, leaving the Kuwaiti public overwhelmed by the rising prices of commodities.
On the other hand, the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee discussed the proposed amendments to the Public Tenders Law, including the 15 percent priority rate for national products and services over foreign counterparts in tender acquisitions. Committee Chairman MP Salah Khoursheid asserted that owing to fruitful meetings with the concerned authorities, the committee has been able to approve proposals deemed beneficial to Kuwaiti youths and the small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He added that national products and services face difficulties in acquiring tenders, so the government should support local enterprises and recognize their importance in the economy.
Furthermore, the decision to release businessman and journalist Mazen Al- Tarazi after being detained for four days one month ago raised questions among MPs; particularly the members of the conservative Islamist bloc. They asked the concerned ministers about the legal grounds for releasing Al-Tarazi and if there was any form of political pressure to do so.
Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee MP Abdulkareem Al-Kandari refuted the political pressure allegation as he confirmed with the deputy minister of foreign affairs that the State has not been subjected to any form of political pressure for the release of Al-Tarazi. He added the dialogues with the Syrian diplomatic envoy in Kuwait were carried out according to diplomatic protocols without any interference in the internal affairs of the State
