Kuwait Keen To Promote Concept Of Battling Graft
The head of the Kuwait’s Audit Bureau, Faisal Al-Shaya, said today (Tuesday), that Kuwait is keen to promote the concept of combating corruption in line with the United Nations Convention by improving the performance of the government sector, and establishing a specialized body in this field to limit the spread of this phenomenon, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Shaya said this on the sidelines of his participation in the 17th meeting of heads of Audit Bureau offices of the Gulf Cooperation Council. He pointed out the Bureau is in the process of signing a cooperation protocol with the Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) in support of strengthening the principle of integrity and transparency, cooperation with state institutions, and protection of public funds.
Al-Shaya added corruption is the waste of wealth and capabilities, the first drain on resources, and the main obstacle to progress and development of all plans for the advancement of the respective nations, because its manifestations will lead to poor revenues, the flight of investments, the inefficiency of services, and will eliminate any development efforts towards reform. He indicated the Arab Gulf states are following the example of the international community by strengthening all efforts to combat and prevent corruption because it is the responsibility of everyone, including oversight agencies, governments, institutions and individuals.
On the other hand, the Observer of International Relations at the Department of Training and International Relations, Heba Al-Awadi, said the meeting’s agenda included discussion on a report issued during the 16th meeting of bureaus chiefs.
Al-Awadi added, what was discussed during the meeting was the joint comprehensive monitoring and the memorandum of the General Secretariat submitted to the meeting regarding the Audit Bureau’s proposal for spreading awareness and knowledge about how to exercise oversight over the goals of sustainable development. It is noteworthy to mention that the annual meeting of the heads of the audit bureaus and audit offices in the GCC countries aim to support the joint work process in areas related to the control of public funds in the member states, which are carried out by the audit offices in the GCC countries.
