Kuwait Is The Second Cheapest City For Expats In The Gulf
On the Expatriate Cost of Living Index for 2022 published by Mercer Consulting, Kuwait scored 131 globally and seventh in the Gulf out of 227 cities across the world, making Kuwait the second-cheapest Gulf city behind Doha, which placed eighth in the Gulf and 133 globally.
According to a local Arabic daily, Hong Kong, Zurich, and Geneva were the top three most expensive cities in the world for foreign workers on a country level. Basel, Switzerland, came in fourth, followed by Bern, New York, and Singapore, which came in seventh and eighth, and Tokyo and Beijing, which came in ninth and tenth.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi were the 31st and 61st most expensive cities in the world for foreign workers in the Arab region, followed by Riyadh in 103, Jeddah in 111, Manama in 117, Muscat in 119, and Doha in 133, while Cairo, Rabat, and Tunisia came in at 154 and 162, respectively (220).
According to the Mercer Index, Ankara is the most affordable city in the world, coming in at number one (227), followed by Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, at number two26, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, at number 225, Islamabad, Pakistan, at number 224, and Karachi, Pakistan, at number 223, respectively. Tashkent (Uzbekistan) is ranked 221 while Istanbul is ranked 222.
The Mercer Index touches on global and regional issues that affect the lives and livelihoods of foreign workers globally and pointed out that the return of high inflation again around the world is making foreign workers increasingly concerned about their purchasing power, which leads them to increase expectations of raising their salaries.
