Kuwait Amends Sports Laws To Help Lift Ban

21 June 2016 Kuwait

Kuwait’s National Assembly has approved amendments to its sports laws, in an effort to lift sanctions lifted placed on by international sports associations.

The amendments will allow the government to shut down sports associations and clubs, including its Olympic Committee

However, several MPs said the changes will not result in the lifting of sanctions as it merely allows for more government interference.

Minister of Information and Youth Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud Al-Sabah said the government provides generous financial aid to much of the country’s sports federations. He said the only way to solve Kuwait’s sports issues is through privatisation.

In October, international football association FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended Kuwait due to its government’s interference in sports clubs.

They have both asked it to alter its domestic laws in order to limit government interference.
