A Saudi blogger Raif Badawi has been sentenced to 10 years jail, 1,000 lashes and a fine of SR 1 million for spreading insulting remarks about Islam.

The internet user named Raif Badawi was sentenced to 6 years jail and 600 lashes but when his appeal to review the punishment was turned down by the higher courts, the punishment was raised to 10 years and 1,000 lashes. His website has been closed.

What was his Mistake?

Raif Badawi was arrested in June 2012 and charged with Cyber Crimes. He was also charged with the crime of not obeying the instructions of his father (treated as a crime in Saudi Arabia).

His website was containing the articles against Islam and Grand Muftis of Saudi Arabia. Initially, the prosecution was trying to prove that he is guilty to insult Islam and hence be provided with the sentence of death but the court dismissed this charge.

Although he still has a right to appeal against the court’s judgment but considering his last attempt when the court almost doubled his punishment, he will think ten times before doing it.

Respecting Islam is your moral duty and living in a country demands that you respect that country and its government. If you have negative comments about Islam, I am 100% sure it is because of the wrong version of Islam communicated to you by different non-Muslim groups.

Western media and terrorist organizations have played a devil’s role in spreading a negative image of Islam. Islam is a religion of peace and brotherhood. So, if you have negative comments about Islam, try to research it from Quran or Hadith before posting it on social media.

Similarly, it is the primary duty of every government to protect the rights of their nationals. The government has every right to make legislation in the better interest of their people.

An expatriate living in Saudi Arabia is the secondary responsibility of the government. If you have any negative comments about any legislation of the Saudi government, put yourself in the shoes of the beneficiaries of the legislation and I think all your concerns will be satisfied.

The lesson from the Story

Saudi Authorities have zero tolerance against contents published against Islam. They have a solid network of detectors whose primary duty is to find such kind of people.

This is only one example; I have also heard that so many other people were sentenced to punishment for sharing inappropriate contents on social media. It is my strong suggestion to all my readers to not to spread any content against Islam or the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
