The Indonesian Government Bans Foreign Tourists From Jakarta's Airport

The transport ministry says Indonesia has temporarily banned foreign tourists from entering the country through Jakarta's airport to stem an outbreak of coronavirus infections caused by the Omicron variant.

Indonesians who have traveled abroad for holidays and foreign tourists who are affected by the new regulations, the ministry said in a statement Monday. The decision to “temporarily restrict tourist arrivals” was intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus, said Novie Riyanto, director-general for civil aviation at the ministry.

More than 36,000 infections have been reported in the Southeast Asian nation on Sunday, with the bed occupancy rate at hospitals in the capital reaching 63 percent.
