India Is The Largest Buyer Of Vaccines In The World
India is the largest buyer of COVID-19 vaccines in the world with 1.6 billion doses, according to a global analysis, a number that some scientists say could cover 800 million people, or 60% of its population, and would be sufficient to establish herd immunity.
According to The Economist, India has bought 500 million doses of the Oxford University and AstraZeneca vaccine, one billion doses of the US company Novavax and 100 million doses of Sputnik's fifth candidate from the Jamalia Research Institute in Russia, according to the Duke University Global Health Innovation Center in the United States.
An analysis by SpeedLaunch, which is updated every two weeks, shows that India has confirmed the purchase of 1.6 billion doses of three vaccines as of November 30, while the United States and the European Union have bought doses of six candidates.
According to the analysis, India is the largest buyer of the COVID-19 vaccine, followed by the European Union, which confirmed 1.58 billion doses, and the United States, the worst affected country so far, which has managed to purchase just over a billion doses.
As countries plan to secure more shots to protect their populations from the new coronavirus contagion, Duke University has released a new global assessment of COVID-19 vaccine purchase agreements, even before any candidate is put on the market.
In their analysis, the researchers noted that countries with manufacturing capacity, such as India and Brazil, have successfully negotiated large developed market commitments with leading vaccine candidates as part of their industrialization agreements.
