India: 13 People Were Killed After Falling Into A Well During A Wedding Celebration In Up's Kushinagar

18 February 2022 Crime News

During the celebration of a marriage in northern India, 13 women and girls fell down a well and died, police said.

Akhil Kumar, a senior police officer in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, said the victims were seated on top of the iron slab when it collapsed on Wednesday.

The district magistrate said the well had become old and could not support the weight of those sitting on the covering.

A debris field crushed the victims after they fell down.

They gathered for a village marriage ritual.

The accident was described by Narendra Modi as "heartbreaking".

He tweeted that the local administration was providing whatever help it could.

There are usually large numbers of guests at Indian weddings and several days of elaborate ceremonies.

The northwestern state of Rajasthan was the scene of a storm-caused wall collapse that killed 24 wedding revellers in 2017.
