Increase In Deficits, Will Harm Salary Payments

19 January 2020 Kuwait

Several economists unanimously agree that Kuwait is at the crossroads and officials must stop “time-cutting better policies” for the reason that budget deficits by calculation amount to KD 32 billion since 2014, which includes the estimated deficit in budget announced lately at a value six times the acceptable percentage, according to international standards, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Former Minister of Information and Communications Sami Al-Nisf said “the increase in deficits, which will prevent government from paying the salaries of employees if it continues, was inherited from previous governments and councils”. He explained “it is a logical result of the philosophy of “temporary state” and “live your day”, which thrive on severe corruption and inefficiencies in the major government projects”, stressing money will not come down from the sky to bridge the deficit.

Commenting on the budget, he tweeted “the survival of deficit will affect the value of Kuwaiti dinar as the country imports everything, so government must stop the ‘river of populist grants’ and start placing the right men in the right places.

An honest and competent official may save a billion dinars while an official that combines ‘theft and misappropriation’ of public money may cost two billion with his wrongful decisions! He called on officials to work, striving to reduce expenditure and increase nonoil income, affirming the most important means is to hold accountable the institutions, bodies and companies having independent budgets for profitability to allow the facilities become a tributary of the state’s general budget- not dependent on it, as it is the case!
