Inbound Flights Expected To Transport More Than 5,000 New Domestic Workers
Chairman of the Voluntary Committee tasked to study the conditions of domestic workers in the country Bassam Al-Shammari revealed that the number of direct flights from the Philippines will increase to 23 in August and September; indicating the flights scheduled for Aug 13 and Sept 10 are expected to transport more than 5,000 new domestic workers, reports Al-Jarida daily. Speaking to the daily, Al- Shammari confirmed that a large number of domestic workers will arrive in the country in batches; asserting this will solve the acute shortage of domestic workers whose services are needed, especially once the academic year starts in September and the announcement of most government agencies on the 100 percent return of their workers.
He pointed out that the increase in the number of direct flights contributes to reducing the recruitment cost through the Besalama platform, which currently amounts to KD490 for a worker recruited from the Philippines and KD390 for a worker from India; indicating these amounts will most likely decrease by 10 percent. He added the number of entry visas for workers from the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Benin has increased remarkably. He then called for increasing the number of accredited PCR laboratories in these countries to ensure the speedy completion of the procedures for the workers to arrive in Kuwait as soon as possible. If this approach continues, the domestic labor market will recover from shortage of workforce by the end of 2022. Employers must abide by the tripartite work contract to protect the rights of workers and to avoid problems which could affect the recruitment process, he concluded.
