Immune Plasma Technology To Support Corona Treatment Ongoing
The director of the blood transfusion services department at the Central Blood Bank, Dr. Reem Al-Radwan, revealed that the program of preparing the immune plasma to confront the emerging corona virus, which started on April 8, is continuing without interruption.
Al-Radwan told Al-Qabas that in this technique, plasma is collected from donors recovering from the Coronavirus, and is prepared in central blood bank laboratories within the international specifications, according to the guidelines of the International Blood Transfusion Organization and the American Blood Banks Organization (AABB). She revealed that more than 200 donated patients from Jaber Hospital and other quarries were contacted, of whom only 50 donated, conditions were met, through which they collected about 150 treatment units, where one donation can extract 3 treatment units.
Radwan added that the transfer of this plasma, which includes antibodies to the virus, to patients is a supportive and not a cure, as it is an attempt to stimulate the immune system to help fight the virus. Radwan explained that the body of the infected person when facing the virus begins to form antibodies to overcome the disease, pointing out that the donation process of the recovered begins after the end of treatment and the period of home quarantine, according to the standards published globally by the World Health Organization, as the antibodies in the plasma The patient’s blood remains at a high level for 3 weeks and then tends to decrease.
Therefore, a specific time schedule is specified for each donor, and they are carefully examined and checked for the presence of these antibodies and to ensure their safety, freedom from diseases and their eligibility to donate before donating according to the rules and regulations International followed a. Al-Radwan noted that we are still receiving plasma donors at the Central Blood Bank in Jabriya, in cooperation with doctors at Jaber Hospital and the quarry operators.
