A high number of Indian expatriates in Kuwait suffer from head, neck and thyroid cancer, reports Aljarida daily quoting a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Board of the Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) Campaign Dr Essa Al-Shaheen. Based on statistics issued by Kuwait Cancer Center, Dr Al- Shaheen explained that the head and neck cancer includes cancers of the mouth, nose, sinuses, salivary glands, throat and lymph nodes in the neck.

Most of these cancers begin in the wet tissue lining the mouth, nose and throat. Head, neck and thyroid cancers are among the tumors that can be cured in the event of early detection of the tumor.

It constitutes about five percent of the total cancers in Kuwait. If thyroid cancer is included because its location is in the head, it will constitute about 8 to 10 percent of all cancers in Kuwait.

The rate of recovery of these cancers is high in case of early detection, due to which early detection and necessary checkup are important. Dr Al-Shaheen drew attention to CAN’s efforts to carry out a campaign for investigating head, neck and thyroid cancer in Kuwait in the coming month of January, under the slogan “Your Health is a Trust” in order to achieve its goal of raising awareness among the public.

It will be done through several activities that vary between organizing lectures and raising awareness in public places by distributing educational brochures.
