Hawally Infested With Mice, Cats, Stray Dogs – Corona Blamed

08 November 2020 Coronavirus

The situation in Hawalli is no different from some of the cities around the world when it comes to cleanliness or infested by rodents, reports Al-Rai daily. The situation in Hawalli was caused by the forced closure of restaurants due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Add to this quarantine, isolation and total lockdown of some areas which deprived rodents, stray cats and dogs of food from garbage bins and forced them to adapt to the new situation as it gave them ample time to wander freely especially at night when the roads were empty for long hours.

The Al-Rai newspaper toured blocks 9 and 10 of Hawalli after a complaint it received from a number of families who clearly suffered from the spread of rats after lockdown and curfew in the area was lifted. Several residents of block 9 and 10 have complained of the menace of rats, cats and dogs which have become accustomed to roaming freely and have caused health and material damage to the area. Some complained about car or computer wires being gnawed by the rats while others complain cats daringly enter their homes looking for food. One of the residents said earlier the spread of rats was controlled by the pest control department of the Municipality but the corona pandemic gave mice an opportunity to increase and multiply.
