Abu Dhabi’s Health Authority (HAAD) has confirmed of a positive case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus in the capital.

The patient is receiving the medical care, state news agency WAM said on Tuesday.

The authority said it is coordinating with the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention and other relevant governmental entities, and has taken all necessary measures as per standards and recommendations from the World Health Organisation.

In order to help prevent respiratory illnesses, the ministry has advised the public to wash hands often with soap and water, use hand sanitiser if the former is not readily accessible, cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw the tissue into a rubbish receptacle.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organisation reported of 10 people suffering from MERS at a hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A total of 18 cases of MERS have been reported in the kingdom between 23 February and 16 March, including two deaths, WHO said.
