25 September 2020 Coronavirus

Google updated its free maps service, Google Maps, this week to provide a feature that shows the spread of Covid-19 in the areas where the user intends, according to what the Internet search giant announced in a blog published on Thursday.

The giant company said that the user will be able to click on the “Covid-19” option, which is accessed through the “Layers” feature at the top corner of the screen, in order to enhance the maps with the results of the last seven days of injuries per 100,000 people in the areas viewed.

There is also an indicator that will allow knowing whether the number of Covid-19 cases at a certain point is registering an increase or a decrease, according to Google Maps product manager Sugoi Banerji.

Banerjee added that the aim of this tool is to provide “basic information about Covid-19 infections in a region, so that you can make decisions based on more information about where to go or what to do.”

He pointed out that the data used in the “Covid layer” in the maps come from several sources, including Johns Hopkins University, the “New York Times” and “Wikipedia”, which obtains information in this regard from health organizations and government health ministries.

The California-based company said that this service will be launched this week around the world through versions of the Maps application for mobile phones running both Apple (iOS) and Google’s Android.

Google has previously provided special services for Covid-19, such as a feature that allows users to know the state of public transport and when it is likely to witness congestion.

“While navigation has become more complex these days, we hope that Google Maps’ features will help you get to where you need to be, as safe and efficiently as possible,” Banerjee said
