Rooting out terrorism needs concerted efforts by all countries so as to save lives of innocents, and maintain security, peace and stability, GCC Secretary General Abdul-Latif Al Zayani affirmed.

This came in a speech delivered on Tuesday by GCC Assistant Secretary General for Security Affairs Hazza' Mubarak Al-Hajri on behalf of Al Zayani before a meeting on combating terrorism and drying up its sources.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 60th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. In the speech, Al-Hajri stressed GCC member states' firm stance, which rejects all forms of terrorism, and their commitments to combating extremist thought adopted by the terrorist groups.

Tolerance and coexistence with nations are key values and principles adopted by GCC countries in dealing with other nations out of Islamic tolerance, he said.

GCC states have realized earlier risks of terrorism posed to the international community so they launched initiatives and made efforts on both international and regional levels, with the aim of curbing risks of terrorism and drying up its funding, he stated.

He recalled the call of the late King of Saudi Arabia Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 2005 for holding an international conference to discuss means of promoting cooperation amongst the world's countries to counter terrorism.

GCC countries are amongst the leading states that condemn organized crime and terrorism in its forms, and work on drying up its funding sources, he said. Al-Hajri called for boosting cooperation amongst security apparatuses all over the world to counter all crimes, mainly crimes of terrorism.

GCC states joined the US-led international coalition to combat the co-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, he stated, referring that these countries are also members in the Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT) that was formed by Saudi Arabia in 2015 for the same purpose.
