Fuel Station Employees Stage Protest, Demand Delayed Salaries
On Tuesday, Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) fuel station employees staged an organized protest after claiming that their salaries have been delayed for four months, Al Qabas reported.
The protests occurred throughout the state-owned fuel stations across the country, starting in the southern gas stations.
With over 120 fuel stations across the country, the strike affected many people as it was reported that there were long lines and traffic at most KNPC owned fueling stations.
A few hours after the protest, the oil company released a statement on Twitter stating that, “Kuwait National Petroleum Company apologizes to its esteemed clients for the inconvenience in a number of its petrol stations, due to the delay of the contracting company responsible for the employees of these stations in paying their salaries”.
While many were discontent with the chaos that occurred due to the strike, several people urged the relevant authorities to protect the workers’ rights.
This is not the first time that fuel station employees have staged a protest. Back in 2016, thousands of members of the Kuwait and Oil and Petrochemical Industries Union workers staged a three-day strike. The protest came after the government was planning on cutting the workers benefits and wages.
