Fatwa Says ‘no’ To Women Joining Army
The Fatwa Board of the Ministry of Awqaf has completed drafting the fatwa on women joining the army and submitted it to the concerned authority, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, specifically to the Minister of Endowments in secret, as it was received confidentially to the authority.
Al-Anba said this came after Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Hamad Jaber Al-Ali sought the opinion of clerics regarding opening the door for Kuwaiti women to join the army after MP Hamdan Al-Azmi included this issue in a grilling request he filed against the minister.
Al-Anba learned from well-informed sources that Fatwa unanimously confirmed that it is not permissible for women to be employed in the military, to wear military uniforms, or to be tried by the military.
The sources also indicated that the Fatwa stipulated a number of conditions for women to work in the military, including that their work should necessarily be limited to the medical field and service matters and that they should not enter the battlefield or live in dormitories, in addition to a number of other conditions.
The Fatwa Board includes nine Sharia scholars Sheikh Dr. Khaled Al-Mazkour, Sheikh Dr. Ajil Al-Nashmi, Dr. Muhammad Al-Tabtabaei, Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri, Dr. Faihan Sorour Al-Mutairi, Dr. Mubarak Jaza Al-Harbi, Dr. Issa Zaki, Dr. Fahd Al-Kandari, and Dr. Bassam Shatti.
