Facebook Users' Feeds Are Flooded With Celebrity Spam Due To A Massive Glitch

25 August 2022 Information

On Wednesday, Facebook users complained about bugs with the social networking site, with many pointing out that their news feed was showing messages from users who were commenting on the profiles of celebrities.

A Meta spokeswoman later acknowledged in a statement that the problem had been rectified. "A configuration change earlier today left some users experiencing issues with their Facebook Feed. We regret any inconvenience and swiftly fixed the problem for everyone who was affected "Forbes cited a Meta spokeswoman as saying this.

Around 2 am ET, Facebook users started receiving complaints about a flood of posts from followers of celebrities like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Eminem, and Harry Styles. Thousands of issues with Facebook were reported by the tracking website Downdetector, with 97% of complaints relating to the service's feed and 3% alleging problems with publishing. According to the website, reports of the outages appeared on both the Facebook website and mobile app.

The discovery of the Facebook bug follows the recent $37.5 million settlement of a lawsuit brought by Meta against the tech giant for allegedly abusing users' privacy. The users told Reuters that while they didn't want the social networking site to know where they were, Meta provided that information from their IP address. According to the report, the corporation is suspected of utilizing such data to give consumers customized advertisements.
