Era Of Smart-meters Begins In Kuwait
After a long wait, Kuwait is finally entering the era of smart meters, reports Al-Qabas daily.
With the completion of installation of 5,000 meters on experimental basis, the ministry will soon issue an order for operating these meters during the National Days.
Central Tenders Committee (CTC) will initially release the tender for installation of 300,000 smart meters in order for companies to bid for it. Kuwait will need a total of 700,000 smart meters. The idea of installing smart meters dates back to pre-invasion times.
However, its implementation faced a lot of challenges and obstacles that led to the delay lasting decades. In May 2017, Ministry of Electricity and Water had signed the smart-meter contract with Zain Company for installation of the relevant infrastructure and network.
n this regard, Undersecretary of Ministry of Electricity and Water Eng Mohammad Boushahri explained that the contract for operation and maintenance of smart-meter system signed with Zain Company includes the installation of 5,000 smart meters in various sectors. Following the installation, these smart meters will be operated during the National Days to study the system and ways to receive the readings, and determine any problems that could arise in the future in terms of these smart meters.
He indicated that Kuwait needs at least 700,000 meters of electricity and water to cover the needs of the country in various sectors, adding that the ministry will be working on installing these many smart meters within two-four years in order to make sure the entire network is based on smart meters
