Equal Opportunities To Men And Women Under Different Circumstances
“The Citizenship law discriminates against women, even though the act is against constitution”, said speakers at a recent forum titled ‘Strange in my country … the suffering of a Kuwaiti woman married to non- Kuwaiti’. The forum organized by Women’s Cultural Social Society aimed to advocate equality for Kuwaiti women who are married to non-Kuwaitis. Former member of Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Justice Lawyer Dr Saad Al-Enezi stated Islam, in the aspect of Sharia, presents equal opportunities to men and women under different circumstances but a Kuwaiti woman is the only woman worldwide who is unhappy, especially as the nightmare starts with her children reaching maturity.
He added some Kuwaiti women are forced to forge documents for their children to obtain rights. He added that women in the Arab world are not treated as they should be in Kuwait after marrying other nationals, and it’s even reached to the point where authorities do not take care of their disabled children, noting he has over 125 cases of children whose rights have been violated by authorities such as the Interior ministry. He called for review of relevant laws.
For her part, Law Professor at Kuwait University Dr Fatma Al-Huwail echoed Dr Al-Enezi’s sentiments that Kuwaiti women married to none Kuwaitis are subjected to discrimination, which is unconstitutional, as they’re treated like foreigners in their own country. She urged women who are married to none Kuwaitis to schedule a date to hold a sit-in at Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW) to demand the right to own private houses. She also called for human right groups to stand with the women to get their full rights. Lawyer Mohammed Al-Khuraibet also said citizenship law is unconstitutional, adding the current condition of granting citizenship to the children of Kuwaiti women who are married to none Kuwait forces many to resort to forged documents by faking divorce with their husbands in order to obtain their children’s rights.
