Efforts To Curtail Violations In The Bird Market And Save Lives

17 August 2022 Kuwait

According to Al-Rai daily, government agencies have mobilized to 'dismantle' and remove violations and correct the market conditions following the report, "Bird Market... a time bomb".

Mohsen Al-Mutairi, the Deputy Director General for the Livestock Sector at the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR), addressed the Deputy Director General for the Administrative and Financial Affairs Sector. By creating a new section for him to keep track of the authority's bird and feed markets and projects, the authority's employees will be able to include the bird and feed market within its organizational structure. According to him, his sector also requested that the proposed section (Birds and Feed Markets Section) be under the control of the veterinary services - Animal Health Department.

According to Mutairi, the authority sent its staff into the bird market to clean it and its surroundings in an effort to protect public health. Kuwait Municipality's director general was asked to provide manpower to clean the bird and feed market. Water drainage pipes were blocked by a large amount of waste and trash. In addition, violations of the building law and the accumulation of random goods in the corridors were observed, which could serve as a spark for a fire.

We also requested that the Ministry of Public Works provide a car every week for draining the accumulated water to complement the efforts made to remove violations from the bird and feed market. It facilitates the drainage of sewage and removes sediments that affect the market's safety and the safety of its patrons. Additionally, it ensures the safety of the existing animals. Kuwait Municipality provided PAAAFR with a building with an infrastructure defect, which was received by PAAAFR.

Further, KFSD official sources said the prevention department and its inspectors play a major role in investigating illegal and unlicensed shops and markets. They also demanded that the authorities responsible for them remove them or modify their legal status and issue them the necessary licenses. Their conclusion was that the current situation is much better than previous years, adding that "everyone is cooperating to implement fire safety protocols". According to the sources, KFSD has a plan to correct the situation in open markets and slums, where fire outbreaks can be very costly and lead to great loss of life. Fire extinguishers will be checked by the Capital's protection inspectors at the bird and feed market.
