The Undersecretary for Correctional Institutions at the Ministry of Interior Major-General Abdullah Al-Muhanna has admitted that drug trade is very much active inside the Central Prison, insisting the correctional facility must adopt a series of measures other than the periodic inspection when reports of drug trade or drug abuse are received, reports Al-Rai daily.

Al-Muhanna said drug trafficking inside the prison is very much ‘alive’ and varies from time to time. He added, sometimes large quantities of drugs are seized and the Ministry of Interior has been fully transparent in announcing these seizures through the media.

He added the facility will continue to address this issue and is determined to eradicate and put an end to what is happening now.

Al-Muhanna also pointed out the recent large-scale drug seizures reflect the facility’s cooperation with the Criminal Investigations Department which has opened an office inside the prison. He pointed out the estimated value of the seized drugs was about KD 2 million, which is huge given the size of the prison and the number of inmates.
