Domestic Worker Recruitment Offices Shutting Down Over Debts

24 September 2020 Information

Head of the Union of Owners of Recruitment Agencies for Domestic Workers Khaled Al-Dakhnan revealed during an interview with Al Jarida daily that the recruitment of domestic workers has been suspended for nearly 9 months, and called on the relevant authorities to restart recruitment visas, while ensuring adherence to all health requirements and precautionary measures.

Al-Dakhnan also noted that the repercussions of the coronavirus crisis have caused many offices to close, while the remaining offices have accumulated debts as they are forced to pay rents on their offices and employee salaries.

During the interview, he asserted that the domestic worker sector is one of the most important sectors, and the labor recruitment companies have been suffering many problems and losses since the establishment of the government company Al-Durra.

He remarked that most of the recruitment offices have incurred large losses which has caused many offices to hand over their licenses to the Public Authority for Manpower, and have canceled their licenses due to their inability to continue in light of this crisis.

Highlighting that the government is supposed to support recruitment agencies until the problem ends, or restart work permits and open the recruitment system like other countries, he revealed that there are plans to bring domestic workers, for example, from the Philippines, and therefore, we are calling on the health and government authorities to allow the recruitment of workers according to health measures.
