Covid-19: Kuwait Surpasses China In Number Of Cases

As of August 31, Kuwait has surpassed mainland China in the total number of COVID-19 cases.

Kuwait reported 463 news cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 85,109, according to the Ministry of Health.

According to the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, as of 24:00 on August 30, mainland China had a total of 85,048 cases. Across China’s 31 provincial regions, there have been 17 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Death and recoveries

China still surpasses Kuwait in the number of deaths - 4,634 deaths as opposed to Kuwait’s 531. The death rate in Kuwait is approximately 0.006 per cent, whereas in China it is at 0.05 per cent.

In terms of recoveries, China has reported that 80,177 have recovered, whereas 77,224 people have recovered in Kuwait.

Timeline of events

Although it is unclear who “patient zero” was, according to unpublished Chinese government data, the first COVID-19 case was detected in Wuhan on November 17. When Kuwait announced the first infection on February 24, China had a total of 77,150 cases.

In terms of deaths, China reported its first known COVID-19 death, a 61-year-old resident of Wuhan, on January 11. Then three months later, on April 4, Kuwait reported its first COVID-19 death.

By the beginning of March, China had already reported 80,000 confirmed cases. Then on March 19, China reported zero local infections, yet the announcement did not mean China was free of the virus as it needs to report zero cases in the span of 14 consecutive days. After three consecutive days of no new cases, on March 22, China reported 46 new cases.

Lockdowns

Both China and Kuwait have had various types of lockdowns. The first lockdown in China was the closure of Wuhan’s borders, on January 23, as Chinese authorities suspended all transportation to and from Wuhan. The lockdown ended on April 8. As for Kuwait, a partial lockdown was first enforced on March 22. Then on May 10, Kuwait put in place a 20-day nationwide total lockdown to combat the spread of the virus. On August 30, after 161 days of being under some form of curfew, Kuwait ended the world’s longest consecutive lockdown.

On May 10, the first day of the nation-wide lockdown, Kuwait announced its biggest spike with 1,065 confirmed cases. As for China, it saw a spike in cases, on July 28, as it announced 64 new cases, the largest one-day spike since March.
