Court Acquitted Expat From Life Term In Drug Trafficking
The Court of Appeals overturned the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which sentenced an expatriate, who was accused of drug trafficking, to life imprisonment, and instead acquitted him of all charges.
Earlier, the investigation officer explained that he received a tip-off that the suspect was in possession of drugs and involved in drug trafficking. After obtaining a warrant from the Public Prosecution, he along with securitymen arrested the suspect from his house.
The suspect admitted to possession of drugs and showed securitymen the drugs he kept in his wardrobe which included 35 sachets containing a powdered substance, and large quantity of narcotic pills. Laboratory tests revealed that the powdered substance was heroin. The suspect informed the investigation officer that he obtained the drugs from an inmate of the Central Prison.
During the court session, the defense counsel Lawyer Ina’am Haidar said her client is not the real defendant in the case, insisting that the appealed verdict should be cancelled. She explained that the request of the Public Prosecution to correct the name of the suspect requires that neither the Court of First Instance nor the Court of Appeals have the right to judge this lawsuit except according to a new file to be referred to the court by the Public Prosecutor with the new name, address and age of the suspect.
