Coronavirus Crisis Brought A Surge In Number Of Social Media Users In Kuwait

President of the Global Electronic Media Club in Kuwait, Hind Al-Nahedh said lockdown and quarantine measures implemented in Kuwait from March 2020 to September 2020 to counter the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Kuwait has prompted citizens and residents to turn to social media such that these sites have witnessed an increase in the number of users during 2020 compared to the year before that, bringing the total number of social media users in Kuwait to about four million, Al-Anba daily reported.

In a special to the daily statement, AlNahedh revealed that Facebook achieved a breakthrough in 2020 compared to 2019, as the number of Facebook users increased by 86 percent, followed by Twitter with 6.6 percent increase, then YouTube with 3.1 percent increase, Pinterest with 1.9 percent increase, and Instagram with one percent increase.

Regarding the number of users of applications inside Kuwait, she stressed that the number of social media users in Kuwait is equivalent to about 99 percent of the total Internet users in the country, adding that the year 2020 witnessed a great surge in the use of social media.

She explained that in 2020, Facebook became the most used social networking site in Kuwait with a total number of three million users, most of whom are men. The number of male Facebook users reached about 1.9 million, constituting 65 percent, and women 35 percent with 1.1 million users. The number of expat users of Facebook in Kuwait is 1.9 million, including one million Arab users. In second place is Instagram, with the total number of users reaching 2.2 million, of which the number of male users is 1.3 million, constituting 62 percent, and the number of female users is 800,000, constituting 38 percent. The number of expatriate users of Facebook is 1.1 million, including one million Arab users. Twitter comes third, with a total of two million users, of whom 1.3 million are male users, equivalent to 65 percent, and 700,000 are female users, equivalent to 35 percent.

Finally, Snapchat came in fourth place, with a total number of 1.8 million active users.
