Corona Crisis Boosts Prices – Shortages In Supply … Slow Delivery
MP Ahmed Al-Hamad has confirmed receiving the response of Minister of Commerce and Industry Abdullah Essa Al-Salman to his queries on the rising prices of commodities, steps taken to control prices, and plan to reduce subsidized commodities like rice and oil. He said the minister attributed the increase in the prices of some commodities to the rising prices of raw materials, lower production in manufacturing countries, lack of workers and long shipping period. The minister explained that these are some of the negative consequences of the Covid-19 crisis, especially on the part of exporting countries with high number of corona cases.
According to the minister, the Monitoring and Consumer Protection Department has taken measures in accordance with law number 10/ 1979 on monitoring markets and controlling prices, Consumer Protection Law No. 34/2014, and Cabinet Decision No. 844/2008 which is part of the efforts exerted by the government to control prices.
The minister also affirmed that there is no intention to reduce subsidized commodities like rice, sugar and oil now; but his ministry is currently working on reducing the quantity of subsidized commodities in cooperation with the Subsidy Committee at the Ministry of Finance.
