Copper Cables Worth Millions Stolen
The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) said its stations have been exposed to a series of thefts with trained thieves stealing copper wires that they sell to others, indicating the cost of compensating for the loss and corresponding maintenance works is estimated at millions of Kuwaiti dinars, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources. Sources disclosed the cost of compensation and maintenance works after such thefts in the last six years exceeded KD6 million, which means the cost per year is more than KD1 million.
Sources pointed out that remote stations in Umm Al- Manaqeesh, Al-Rawdatain and others have witnessed repeated stealing of copper wires, sometimes for two consecutive days; making it difficult for the ministry to repair damages caused by the thefts. Sources added copper wires were stolen from nine stations Sabah Al-Ahmad residential area recently; disclosing the thieves took about 5,000 meters of copper wires whose value is estimated at KD150,000 including the cost of excavation and maintenance works. Sources said these stations have been witnessing copper wire thefts for several years.
