Continuing Probe Into Soldier's Murder And Suicide

18 July 2022 Crime News

There are still investigations underway into the circumstances and motivations behind the killing of a soldier by a colleague in an army camp in Mubarakiya, as well as the suicide of a person "in military uniform" at a private shooting range.

According to a high-ranking source, the number of drug users among army employees has reached about 2,000 since 2016. Approximately 130 officers are among them, some of whom have been treated and have recovered from drug addiction, while others have been dismissed. Sources explained that the officers were dismissed due to their failure to comply with the treatment program, such as after receiving three consecutive warnings from the authorities handling the addiction treatment file.

Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled issued immediate orders after the death of the soldier by his colleague to establish a control room to track the number of soldiers who still pose a danger within the institution, intensify investigations, conduct regular drug checks, and do a background check on applicants for admission to military colleges, institutes, and courses.

A medical team that follows up addiction cases and detects abusers is supported by Sheikh Talal without hesitation. To immunize the armed forces employees against this scourge, and to address those who cover up cases of abuse between some officers and individuals, decisions and deterrent measures are currently being examined in preparation for the start of work. To limit the number of addicts that can be treated before they escalate, all parties involved must reconsider and cooperate on the limited financial and medical resources available for treating and rehabilitating addicts.

The minister and the ministry's leaders have become deeply concerned about this file. In response to the killing of a soldier by a colleague, the minister of defense announced that he had issued orders to conduct a comprehensive review of security and health procedures in all army units and camps.

"Anybody responsible for failing to implement the orders and instructions will be held accountable, since the safety of the army's employees is first and foremost.", the minister said. As well as the latest findings from the investigation regarding the details and motives of the incident, he stated that he follows up all procedures directly and round the clock with the Military Security Department and other concerned authorities in the Ministry of Interior.
