Civil Bodies Slam Conduct During Speaker’s Election

22 December 2020 Information

Public benefit organizations criticized the events that took place during the opening session of the National Assembly last Tuesday, reports Al-Qabas daily. In a statement, they said, “We, as citizens and as representatives of civil society institutions, were pained by what happened in Abdullah Al-Salem Hall (House of the Nation) during the opening of the 16th legislative term.
The accompanying events do not represent the original Kuwaiti society’s belief in the democratic approach, and are inconsistent with the morals and etiquette of Kuwaiti people, which is part and parcel of them.

As reported on social media, the chaos and verbal bickering during the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly were considered to reflect the supremacy of culture of the loud voice and exclusion of the language of reason and dialogue that should prevail in people’s homes. They undermine democracy and its known tools and methods.”

They demanded the legislative and executive authorities to issue an explanatory statement and an official apology to the Kuwaiti people, with an immediate and urgent investigation into all the events and practices that took place during the election process of the Speaker of the National Assembly, as well as the subsequent events that took place inside the National Assembly offices.

They stressed that the transmission of the event by various social media and media channels showed violation of the order and public morals, and damaged the reputation of Kuwaiti democracy internally and externally, adding that it is necessary to refer all those involved to the competent authorities as no one is above the law.
