Car Rental Offices Are Being Inspected By The Interior
The General Traffic Department, in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Department of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, launched a campaign against vehicle buying, selling, and leasing offices in Al-Ardiya, according to the Coordination and Follow-up Department of the Leasing Department in the Ministry of Interior, headed by Brigadier Khaled Mahmoud.
The goal of the campaign, according to Lt. Col. Abdul Rahman Al-Awadi, Assistant Director-General of the Leasing Department, is to protect consumers from legal liability because some office owners rent vehicles without comprehensive insurance, force customers to sign illegal contracts by tampering with the terms of the agreement, or force the customer to sign a bill of exchange, according to a statement to a local Arabic daily.
According to Al-Awadi, the effort resulted in the examination of 36 such offices to guarantee that the ministerial decision on car rental was followed.
Officers discovered 23 offices closed, in contravention of Ministerial Resolution 723/2020 Article 1, paragraph 5, which states that "working hours shall not be fewer than 12."
"We were informed by the Ministry of Commerce that they will submit a report on the closed offices and retract some licenses," Al-Awadi said. "Offices whose owners deliberately closed them during the campaign will be blocked and will not be allowed to engage in work until their situations are corrected."
Hamid Al-Dhafiri, the head of the Ministry of Commerce's emergency team, said that the campaign resulted in major infractions being registered against some offices.
Al-Dhafiri finished by stating that the emergency team works around the clock, receives customer complaints, and in the event of a complaint, the office owner is summoned, and if any violations are discovered, quick action is taken.
5 Consumer Protection Cases
The inspections are designed to safeguard consumers from legal liability in the following situations:
1 – There is no comprehensive insurance on the rented vehicle.
2 – Customers are compelled to sign contracts that have been tampered with.
3 - Making the buyer sign a bill of exchange without their consent
4 – Failure to install a vehicle tracking device
5 – Providing vehicles to domestic workers on a rental basis
