British Primary Teacher Still In Jail Despite Acquittal For Drugs Related Case
The parents of a British primary teacher claim their 35-year-old daughter who was acquitted about a month ago by the Court of Appeals in a drugs possession case, is still being held in a Kuwaiti prison, reports Al-Rai daily. A diplomatic source confirmed to the Al-Rai newspaper that the British Embassy in Kuwait is following up on the teacher’s case is concerned with her affairs, and that some administrative procedures delay her release from prison, denying that the British citizen, who was prosecuted, has been subjected to any mistreatment.
The source confirmed that the British citizen is scheduled to be released after completing some procedures related to her case, and the embassy is in constant contact with her without any obstacles. According to what the parents of the teacher Sarah Al-Sayed told the BBC, a Kuwaiti court had sentenced her to 10 years in prison after policemen found drugs in her car while she was returning from work, but she appealed against the ruling until she finally succeeded in obtaining the acquittal last June.
The father, Ziad al-Sayed, was quoted as saying: “Although her conviction has been overturned, she is still behind bars … The worst feeling in the world is the feeling of powerlessness to help your daughter … She is in prison now for the wrong reasons. We are very worried for her,” he added. “She calls us at night while crying.” “It’s horrible,” said her mother, Helen Conybeer. I can’t sleep at night. I’m just trying to tell her during our phone calls about what’s going on in my daily life to keep her thinking about what she’s facing there.” The parents indicated that they had appealed to the British Foreign Office to intervene to help release their daughter from what they described as a “nightmare”, but the ministry told them, “We can do nothing.”
