Boy Sold His Kidney For An Iphone 9 Yrs Ago, He Continues To Be Bedridden For Life
When the iPhone 12 series was launched by Apple on October 13, people could not stop talking about it.
While the features were in focus, many also spoke about the high price.
Netizens came up with funny memes and jokes. Some even spoke of stealing cash or giving up a kidney.
But there is a shocking reality behind the kidney joke. It happened to a 25-year-old in China.
In 2011, Wang Shangku sold a kidney to buy 2 Apple devices.
Wang was 17 then, peddled his kidney on the black market for $3273 USD. He then bought an iPhone 4 and an iPad2 with the money, as per a Vice report.
Because of his desperation, he replied to a message from an organ harvester in an online chatroom. He was informed that he could earn 20,000 yuan ($3000).
Some months post the surgery, Wang's other kidney had an infection. As years went by, his condition became worse and he could not leave his bed needing daily dialysis to clear his blood of toxins.
A report by NPR said that Wang's mother grew suspicious after the surgery and he confessed to her. 9 people were arrested on charges of organ trading.
An iPhone proved to be too costly for this young man.
