Audit Bureau Warns Of Possible Electricity Shortage In 2022 And 2023

17 August 2021 Kuwait

The recent report of the Audit Bureau warned of the possibility of a shortfall in the production of electric power during the next two years in 2022 and 2023, Al-Rai daily reported.

The production capacity is to reach 1,000 megawatts, as a result of the ministry’s postponement of most of the projects of the executive plan in 2019 to meet the demand for electricity and water until 2035.

The report indicated that the committee proposed several recommendations to avoid the expected shortage, but some of the recommendations have not been achieved so far, most notably the postponement of the Shuaiba South Station being out of service from 2022 to 2025, and the postponement of the Doha East Station from 2023 to 2027 until the new power stations are operational, North Az-Zour, the second and third phases, and Al-Nuwaiseeb station.

The ministry’s plan also included starting the operation of the Al-Zour station and the Nuwaiseeb station in the third quarter of 2022, but so far, the two projects have not been put forward.

The committee recommended expediting the implementation of renewable energy projects to operate 500 megawatts before the summer of 2023, with a storage capacity of 5 hours, so that the generated energy can be used during peak times.
