As Retirees Organize Sit-ins, The Government Must Study The Parliamentary Recommendation Seriously
The government has been trying to prepare additional scenarios after the National Assembly session for retirees ended on Thursday. The goal is to get out of the impasse it finds itself in following the attack by the parliament accusing it of turning back on the decision it made about distributing to retirees part of the profits of PIFSS.
There is a tendency to diversify the offers for retirees in parallel with the parliamentary recommendation, according to a local Arabic daily, to separate a grant of 3,000 dinars for the government project to amend the Insurance Law. The sources said the government apparatus is working to find a way out of the embarrassing situation, and to prove that it's on the side of retirees.
According to the sources, the government is open to all scenarios, and there are more than one options available to the Cabinet for discussion tomorrow, particularly in terms of meeting some retiree demands, such as reducing installment payments for the 'good loan' from 15 percent to ten percent, and other things; the government's vision will be clear after the meeting.
A sit-in was organized at Al-Erada Square yesterday evening by dozens of retirees protesting the inability of the General Assembly and the government to reach an agreement.
A source in the Parliament told Al-Rai that "the government is under no obligation to re-examine the parliamentary recommendation again" to escape from the embarrassing situation in which it finds itself. The Finance Minister said before Thursday's session that the government is not opposed to re-examining the recommendation.
There will be an announcement concerning the retirees' grant distribution in the near future, since there is a pressing need for more flexibility in light of the pending prime minister interrogation on March 29, and since the government has the possibility of defusing the resentment by announcing the distribution.
While MP Khalil Al-Saleh demanded the Finance Committee issue a report on retirees grant away from the controversial amendments to the Insurance Law, MP Dr. Hisham Al-Saleh said disbursing the retirees' stipend is a necessity that cannot be delayed. MP Abdullah Al-Tariji stressed that the 3,000 dinars grants are not a chance for profit-making or procrastination.
