Annul Faith As Requirement In Granting Kuwaiti Citizenship
Despite the controversial debates on two bills amending several provisions of Nationality Law number 15/1959 to allow the naturalization of non-Muslims, these bills have been included in the agenda of the Parliament session scheduled for Wednesday.
These bills aim to remove faith as a requirement in granting citizenship to individuals recognized for their distinguished services to the country, as well as match the law with the Constitution which states “the people are peers in human dignity and have equal rights and obligations in the eyes of the law. There shall be no differentiation between them because of race, origin, language or religion.”
The 24th report of the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee confi rmed these bills are void of constitutional discrepancies and will rectify Article Four of the Nationality Law as the current version contravenes the Constitution.
On the other hand, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lieutenant General Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah, who spoke on behalf of the government, revealed the executive authority took into consideration the fact that Islam is the religion of the State of Kuwait as stipulated in Article Two of the Constitution. Based on this, nationality should be granted only to Muslims, so the government rejected the two bills, he added.
