Allow Fishing Of Shrimp, Zubaidi, Maide To Cover Shortage Of Local Fish

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry intends to ask the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) to allow the fishing of shrimp, zubaidi and maide in Kuwaiti waters to cover the acute shortage of local fish.

Sources pointed out the people’s need for local fish must be addressed, taking into consideration that the country has been experiencing exceptional circumstances as it passed through the periods of total and partial curfew, as well as the holy month of Ramadan.

Sources said the period of permitting the fishing of shrimp, maide and zubaidi begins next month can be bypassed in order to allow fishing and selling earlier than planned at Sharq and Fahaheel markets, while adhering to health requirements and booking of appointment to shop in these markets. Sources added the authority should estimate the demand for fish and allow fishing in the current month. Regarding the conditions of the fish market, the stalls are empty and local fish lovers are frustrated.

The connoisseurs of zubaidi, shrimp and maide — citizens and residents — are appealing to PAAAFR to allow the fishing of these seafoods.

The Turkish fish sibas dominates the market, along with Saudi shrimp. Small quantities of Iranian zubaidi and hammour are available, but the consumers are reluctant to buy because of the high price.

The price of one kilo of Iranian hammour reached KD 5, KD 9 for Iranian zubaidi, KD 3 to KD 5 for sibas depending on the size, KD 4 for salmon, KD 2 for Saudi shrimp and KD 4 for Pakistani shrimp.

On the other hand, Kuwaiti Municipality closed a stall for violating public sanitation regulations and selling spoiled items. This step was taken after a citizen filed a complaint with the municipality inspectors in the eastern market that he found a cockroach among the shrimp purchased from an Asian vendor.
